Time to Plant a Garden!

I'm inspired by the daffodils popping their heads up in my yard suddenly! Next week I'll have blooms. I decided that today was the day to plant a few seeds. I'm not getting too industrious yet: I'll buy some starts in May and get those in my raised-bed garden. Today I just put a few lettuce seeds down in planter pots to see what will happen. I haven't had much luck with lettuce yet in my garden, and I'm hoping it's not already late to plant this cool-weather crop. I also planted a little bit of broccoli to see what would happen. I suspect that the planter pots are not the best place for lettuce, but I was too lazy to actually break ground an fertilize my small patch of soil.

It looks like my laziness had a purpose. It suddenly started to hail, and I'm safe inside already!

Who else out there is planting a garden? What are your favorite things to grow? Any tips for a lazy gardener like me?

I am planting some veggies this year for the first time ever :0). I really don't have any tips but I just truck along with whatever the package says, lol. I started my tomato plants from seeds and they have grown beautifully in my upstairs craftroom by the window. Hopefully in about 2-3 weeks I can transfer them outside in their pots that I put them in. I also want to grow carrots and squash in my yard. And today as we were at Home Depot I saw blueberry and raspberry bushes and was very tempted to get some. I was thinking if I buy big enough pots for them they can grow in those and whenever we move they come with us.

I haven't planted anything outside yet. I'm trying my luck with an indoor kitchen window box full of herbs. I worked in agriculture for a while and we used Jiffy Peat Pellets (you can Google them) to get things started. They are flat little disks that when watered expand. You plant the seed and let it get started indoor and then you can plant the whole thing in the ground. I just saw some today at a Winco grocery store. I'm sure they're readily available. Perfect for a lazy gardener. Good luck.

Melanie, you seem very industrious! I've heard raspberry bushes are hard to tend to, but maybe in a pot they would be more manageable.

You and I are on the same wave length, I just posted my garden plans. Although it will be a month + before I can go outdoors with the planting so we are starting in egg cartons inside.

Mild Country White Sourdough Bread

I gave up on producing a showy loaf a long time ago.  I always rolled my eyes a little when I saw photos online of perfect bloom or wide-open crumb.  "The mustard is going to just fall right through," I would think to my self disapprovingly, shaking my head a little. It turns out, I was just jealous. After a decade of gluten-free bread baking and recipe development, and through a collaboration with some other bakers, I've come up with a gf sourdough bread recipe that produces an open crumb, a large bloom, and sometimes, if I'm lucky, an ear.   The bread has a very mild, pleasant sourdough flavor and is very light in color. The crumb is very open but not too delicate.  It has a chewiness to the texture that I associate with a good sourdough bread.  The crust gets a nice browning and it toasts up nicely. Quick Yeasted Sourdough Sandwich Loaf Recipe

Readers have been asking if they can bake the Gluten-free Sourdough Discard Bread in a bread tin.  The answer seems to be yes, it usually works.  However, I've created this new recipe that is more of a sandwich style loaf.  This recipe is a single rise recipe, so it's quick and easy. Need to create a sourdough starter? This is the method I use most:  https://glutenfreegourmand.blogspot.com/2021/10/sourdough-starter-ready-to-use-in-3-7.html Why yeasted sourdough?  Sometimes it's tricky to get a great rise out of sourdough when you're first starting out.  Also, creating a new sourdough starter creates a bit of discard that can be used up in other recipes to improve the flavor and texture of the product.
