Revisiting the Deschutes Brewery

As chance would have it, I had an opportunity to dine at Deschutes Brewery this evening, and I was able to procure their beer list.  I reviewed their current gluten-free beer in a previous post, but I didn't have the official description until today:

Gluten Free ESB

100% Gluten-Free Ale!  This beer is made with sorghum, brown rice, maple syrup, and molasses for a smooth gluten-free experience.  We used Topaz and Brewer's Gold hops for bittering and Willamette and Sterling hops for aroma.  Tell your friends!

IBU's: 49  Alcohol content: 5.7%

You can see their list of "What's on Tap" on the Deschutes Brewery website, but it's often incorrect where the GF beer is concerned.  Click here to find a link to the gluten-free menu at the Portland Pub.  I had the steamer clams with house-made GF bread sticks and a house salad withe gluten-free croutons.  You can't see the croutons in the photo because I had already eaten them all before I took the picture.  Sorry!

Deschutes is our go-to GF casual dining out place, love it! It's sad though that in the last few months they have stopped frying their fries in a dedicated fryer. I loved being able to have them there :(

How fun! GF breadsticks & croutons yet! YEA I have a massage client who wists about finding GF breadsticks - will have to tell her about theirs :)
Having grown up in Redmond, I spent a lot of weekends camped on the Deschutes River with my fly-fishing dad & bird watching mom, so esp appreciate their efforts in producing good GF beer :)

I am currently corresponding with Deschutes about the changes they made from gluten free to the now, misnamed "gluten friendly" menu, which includes items previously fried in dedicated fryers now done in contaminated ones. Please, if you have had an issue with this, contact me at jazminecat at gmail dot com.

Gaile, Thanks for the comment! I agree that "gluten-friendly" is an odd way to name a menu for people who are not on friendly terms with gluten. However, I do appreciate how they are very clear about what ingredients are in everything, and what might be prone to cross-contamination. Since they have stopped cooking the fries in a dedicated fryer I have not ordered them. I have never had a problem with anything else they have served me, and the wait staff has always been really knowledgeable and helpful with all of my questions. That's much more than I get from most restaurants, so I'm very happy eating there on a regular basis.
